Steel mill parts,
machined for the line.

A steel line punishes every part in the drive: torque, shock and heat. We machine the gear shafts, couplings, pinch rolls, castings and forgings that keep the mill and the caster running — to your drawing, or measured from the part that came out.

Mill drives live on torque and shock

Rolling mill drives combine high torque with the shock of a bite. A gear shaft carries both through the teeth and the journals, so the tooth data and the bearing seats are referenced to one set of centres. Where the pinion is also worn, cutting the pair together keeps the contact pattern under load.

Roll line parts

Pinch rolls, roll journals and bearing seats are judged by diameter, runout and surface condition. We machine the body and the journals in one set-up where the drawing allows, then check the seat against the bearing that will run on it. Wear parts can be made one-off when the line is down.

Castings and forgings are verified first

A steel plant part often starts as a casting or forging. The blank is checked against its mill certificate on receipt, and ultrasonic testing is applied where the drawing asks for it. Machining starts only after the material is accepted; a substitution is agreed with you in writing.

Heat treatment and hardness

Quenching and tempering precede tooth cutting; induction hardening follows where a hard tooth surface is specified. Hardness and case depth are recorded on the route card. Distortion after hardening is checked against the drawing before the part is released.

What the shop can hold

Gears up to 8 m outside diameter, work up to 8 m in turning diameter, shafts up to 12 m between centres, and single castings or forgings up to 35 t. Hobbing, shaping, heat treatment and inspection are in the same workshop.

Inspection and reports

Dimensional records cover bores, journals, keyways, tooth pitch and runout. Ultrasonic and hardness results are added where specified. Reports travel with the part and can be issued in English for export; a plant template can be followed if it is sent with the enquiry.

Replacement during a shutdown

A shutdown date is fixed, so the part has to fit the first time. We work from the worn part or the drawing, issue the drawing for approval, and confirm the inspection points before cutting. One piece is enough — there is no pattern charge and no minimum order.

Steel mill questions

Can you match a gear shaft without the original drawing?
Yes. Send the worn shaft or its mating gear and we measure the unworn references, reconstruct the tooth data and journals, and send the drawing back for approval before machining.
Do you machine the pinion and gear as a pair?
Where both parts come to us, yes. Cutting and checking them as a set keeps the contact pattern correct when the old parts are worn unevenly.
Can you machine a large casting or forging?
Yes, up to 35 t single piece, with the blank verified against its mill certificate and ultrasonic testing where specified.
How long does a replacement take?
Usually four to eight weeks from the approved drawing, depending on size, module and heat treatment. The date is confirmed with the quotation.

Send the drawing, or the worn part.

Tell us the mill, the caster or the roll line, the part and what it is doing. We reply with what we can measure, the material questions we still need answered, and a date.
